BLESSING LIMAN, Nigeria's First Female Military Pilot

Click for Full Image Size
In June 2010, Shamsudeen Usman, then the Nigerian Minister for National Planning dropped a bombshell during a presentation: Northern Nigeria has the highest level of illiteracy on earth. Although I wouldn't know how the World Bank came about its figures which the minister quoted, I will be deceiving myself to say that all is well with education in the north.

That explains why it calls for celebration when a young lady from the same northern region becomes the first female combatant pilot not only in Nigeria, but in the entire West African subregion. I present to you the amazing story of Nigeria's winged eagle, BLESSING LIMAN.

Intelligent, witty and yeah, beautiful, Blessing Liman is the first female military pilot of the Nigerian Air Force. In other words, while some Banana Island girls will be shakaraing the entire neighborhood with their Infiniti FX 37, Blessing plays with jet fighters and bombers. Can you beat that? Try again.MORE PICTURES AFTER THE CUT :P

BIRTH, EARLY DAYS & SCHOOLING

Born 29 years ago (13th March, 1984), Blessing Liman hails from Kaduna State (kai! Those KD gals! Lol!) and is an indigene of Zangon Kataf Local Government Area. She later attended the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology (NCAT), Zaria, Kaduna State. She was of the SP-24A set of pilots and they were referred to as the Knights of the Air. Cool nickname, I'd say!

BECOMING NAF'S FIRST FEMALE COMBATANT PILOT

She was commissioned as a Combat Flying Officer alongside 126 others who finished the Direct Short Service Course 2010/2011 Cadets of the 325 Ground Training Group at the Nigerian Air Force Base, Kaduna. Present at the winging ceremony (badge decoration) was the then Chief of Air Staff, Air Vice Marshal Mohammad Dikko Umar who described her training as a 'very laudable achievement'. I very much agree with the former CAS.

Before her winging on Friday, 27th of April, 2012, she and other pilot officers (she was the only female) went for 12 months intensive flight training in various nations of the world -United States, Greece, Belarus, United Kingdom, Pakistan and Egypt. The Federal Government spent billions of naira on the training as $650,000 was spent on each trainee. The team came up with 14, well-trained fighter jet pilots. She enlisted into the Nigerian Air Force in July 2011 and was commissioned on the 9th of December, 2011. After her commissioning, she was nominated for the 2012 THISDAY Award for Excellence.

She was quite excited and proud to have made history and said: "It is very uplifting and I feel very proud of myself though it has been very challenging. Coming from the civil war and the civil mentality, the Air Force has done a great job because it has changed our orientation. I believe that all females have equal opportunity to dignify their rights in whatever adventure they choose they can do."

“I am going to work, with prayers, dedication and hard work, I know I will succeed.”

'As a first female pilot I would want to make a mark that would encourage other females to join the military because I believe that all females have equal opportunity to exercise their rights in whatever they choose to do, I believe that all female Nigerians who choose to become pilots can do it since I have done it.'

TONTO DIKEH, MERCY JOHNSON RATINGS IN NOLLYWOOD DROP!

The death knell for Tonto Dikeh and Mercy Johnson in Nollywood has been sounded. Both actresses, according to rumours making rounds in the industry, are beginning to get less attention and movie roles from producers and directors.

While the trouble with Tonto Dikeh, as a reliable source puts it is that, “Tonto Dikeh is no more on the most wanted list of producers and directors again. They don't know if she is a musician or an actor again.

Moreover she is getting too much on her hands to the dislike of those in Nollywood. And for Mercy Johnson, her problem is just eating too much at a particular time. Mercy is having more than she can swallow.”

But in a swift reaction, a Nollywood stakeholder, Oliver Peters via telephone countered the rumours, “That is not really true. Tonto Dikeh and Mercy Johnson remain favourites of the industry. But for now, Tonto is so busy that she is not having much time for movie shoots. And the case with Mercy is that she just returned from abroad where she had gone to deliver her baby. For now she is taking her time off movie shoots.”!

Tuface And Josephine Anenih Escape Death In Averted Plane Crash

A very big disaster was averted last Sunday, May 19th, when an SAA South African Airways Airbus A340-600, registration ZS-SNG performing flight SA-60 from Johannesburg (South Africa) to Lagos (Nigeria) conveying over 300 people developed an electrical fault in Mid-air. I got this info from someone on the flight and i am suprised that it's not in the news.

I heard about it yesterday when a work colleague of mine was narrating the entire story to me and another guy in his car. According to him, he was on the flight that faithful day..it was a night flight and he was listening to music from his Ipod when he perceived a foul burning odor, he thought the white man sitting next to him had farted but he knew it something more serious when he noticed people panicking.

He pulled his headphones and asked the white guy sitting next to him why people where panicking, all the white man was saying was ’’this plane is going to crash! This plane s going to crash!..all of a sudden the lighting system in the aircraft went off…everyone was mad with fear.. some started praying others brought out their blackberries and started pinging, some started calling loved ones and telling them their last wishes.

The captain then announced that the plane had developed an electrical fault and they were going to have an emergency landing. The pilot then turned the plane around and headed back to South africa, My colleague then revealed that it was then he saw 2face Idibia walk past him and when he looked back he saw the popstar talking and calming his crew down, telling them not to panic.

After 45 minutes, the captain announced that they were going to ‘dump the fuel’ i.e remove all the jetfuel on the plane, this is a precautionary step taken by pilots whenever a plane is going to crash or whenever there is a risk of fire. As they were about to land….another problem came up…the captain announced that the tires of the plane could not come out..by then everyone on the plane had given up.

Miraculously, the tires came out and the plane successfully landed and the passengers were evacuated. My colleague then said that himself and other passengers were taken to the arrival lounge, that was when he met Tony Anenih’s wife,Josephine, they talked and exchanged cards.

After much investigation, it was a kettle that sparked in the kitchen that affected the whole electrical system of the plane. According to my colleague a lot of Nigerians including senators constituted the bulk of passengers.

Boy dies because of iPad

IPAD.
A 15-year-old boy who refused to let go of his Apple iPad was dragged along a Las Vegas street and died after the potential thieves, driving an SUV, ran him over, police said.
On Sunday, Metro Police in Las Vegas announced two arrests in the crime. The suspects, identified as Jacob Dismont, 18, and Michael Samuel Solid, 21, both of Las Vegas, face charges of open murder, robbery and conspiracy to commit robbery.
The teen was identified as Marcos Vincente Arenas, 15, of Las Vegas. He was a freshman at Bonanza High School, officials with the Clark County School Distriannouncedct told the Las Vegas Sun.
According to authorities, the boy was walking along a main street, Charleston Boulevard, on Thursday afternoon when a male suspect opened the passenger door of an SUV – possibly a Ford Explorer or Expedition – and walked over to the youth and grabbed the iPad he was holding. The suspect pulled the boy back to the vehicle, then drove off with both the man and the teen holding onto the tablet. The SUV accelerated, the boy fell and was struck by it, police said.
A memorial at the site of the incident was growing Sunday, where had been placed a pot of flowers with this note attached from his grandfather: “I love you Marcos. I miss you!!”
A spokesman for the Metro Police said that the crime is part of a trend called “apple picking” – street slang used to describe thefts of Apple products, such as iPhones, iPods and iPads.
“They’re valuable; they are something that can be quickly sold,” he said. “They’re lightweight, portable – you can run and hide with them. It’s about the next best thing to stealing money,” he said, adding that sometimes the victims are children who are accosted by older teens.
In New York City in 2012, police reported that homicides were at the lowest level in 40 years, but that overall crime increased, mainly because of the thefts of Apple products, including iPhones and iPads.
